Rift Soul Attunement System Guide

Read this Rift soul attunement system guide to clear out game mechanic confusions

Rift: Planes of Telara has been gaining a lot of attention these days. The game is beautifully made, from the dynamics of the game to the eye candy environment. But the most intriguing feature of the game is the character customization. The makers call it “Soul Attunement System”. The new and unique system brings out almost endless character customization. The downside about this feature though, is that it can get very confusing sometimes. Fear not. This Rift soul attunement system guide will hopefully clear out any confusion.

Unlike other MMORPG (Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game) where the class system is limited, in Rift they encourage you to mix and combine souls and abilities to produce a character that is very unique. To start this Rift soul attunement system guide. Lets start at the very basics.

Rift Soul System

Souls

The game starts with character creation where you have just acquired a character with an ascended soul. This ascended soul must first chose his calling or class. There is the warrior, mage, cleric and rouge for you to choose from. This will be the initial soul of your character. As you gain more experience and choose new abilities, you character will also become more specialized. Make sure you balance your abilities so that you can be flexible to do both solo and group adventures. As you reach higher levels, you will gain access to other souls (subclass) within your class. Once you have gained the ability to attune an additional soul, then you can adopt, augment or replace other souls within the class. They call this whole process “Soul Attunement”.

The Soul Tree

Souls that you initially have and those you can acquire have a “Soul Tree”. The soul tree is further divided into the branch and the roots.

The soul tree branch is where the players can actively invest their soul points acquired by playing the game. You can specifically choose new ability or upgrade an old one. These abilities can either be passive or active in nature. As you invest more points in a soul tree branch, it will unlock higher-level skills within the soul tree.

The soul tree roots acts differently. It is rather opened up automatically in relation to a specific skill you chose to points in the soul tree branch. Different skills will also open different abilities in the soul tree roots.

As you grow stronger and stronger, you will gain the ability to attune up to 3 different souls. This is what makes Rift different from other MMORPG, and hopefully with this Rift soul attunement system guide you will have a basic idea of the game works.

Rift class system: Rift Class System Overview

The Rift class system offers players almost unlimited character customization. During character creation a player chooses their first Ascended Soul which is a base class such as a warrior, rogue, mage or cleric.

As the character levels, the Rift class system allows them to customize their character even further by letting the player choose a soul to help them specialize in the class even more. These classes are varied from assassin, warden, stormcaller, archon and so forth. There are eight different souls per base class that each character is allowed to branch off to.

This is a great feature, since there are only 4 base classes, this means a player only has to make 4 different characters which can be built however they see fit. It allows the player to spend time playing the game how they want to instead of having to do the same quests over multiple times to level up.

Along with choosing souls to enhance your character, each soul has a talent tree that allows the player to further customize their character as they level to how they see fit. These talents aren’t separate either, they complement other talents in the other soul trees which can really change the way you play the game from one soul combination to another.

Compared to other MMO games of the same style, the Rift class system may seem discouraging at first, but the game lets the player ease into it by starting them off one class at a time. Letting them become comfortable with the mechanics until they get to choose their next soul after completing a quest to unlock it.

With all the various combinations that the Rift class system offers a player, the combination choices can be daunting when presented to you. Trion eased the pressure by including information in the tooltips showing classes complement each other. Players are also allowed to preview the soul trees before they choose a class. As you play the game, you are allowed to change souls at will, so if that ranger and assassin combination didn’t work out for you, you can go talk to an NPC and give another class a try.

Not only is this class system great for each player to fit their playing style, but it allows other players to create builds which enhance their groups or guilds.
